Many ancient space-faring cultures and a few modern one’s practice uplift. Some theoretical scientists suggest that all sentient races once went through an uplift process. “Uplift” is an acquired template that can be added to any animal, plant, or vermin with an Intelligence score of 2 or a -4 Intelligence ability modifier (referred to hereafter as the base creature). It uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here. With your game master’s permission, a player may choose an uplifted species as a character race. Uplift recipients often turn to biotech, nanotech, and cybernetics to further augment themselves, because not enough can really be said about having opposable thumbs.

Empathy (Su) As a full action, Clyde can attempt a Sense Motive check to read the emotions of a particular creature (DC = 20 or 10 + its Bluff modifier, whichever is higher). If he succeeds, he learns its general disposition and attitude toward creatures within 30 feet of it, and he gains a +2 circumstance bonus to Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive checks against that creature for 1 hour. Whether you succeed or fail, after opening your mind to read emotions, you take a –2 penalty to saving throws against mind-affecting effects for 1 minute.
Healing Touch (Su) Once per day, Clyde can spend 10 minutes to restore 5 Hit Points to an ally.
Reach (Ex) Due to his extraordinarily long arms Clyde has a natural 10 ft. reach.
Clyde is a first generation beneficiary of uplift. Destined for medical testing on a hidden corporate moon base he had little hope for a future beyond pain, but the facilities were overrun by the insectoid Swarm shortly after his arrival. Call it destiny or fate, but during the slaughter of corporate scientists the juvenile primate was over looked by the Swarm in his small cryo-tube. Only a couple days later he was discovered by the Dark Star starfinder, close to starvation but still alive. Avril, a solarian icon and the groups leader, saw Clyde as an instant opportunity for an uptick in her holotube following. She played up their latest mission claiming that against all odds they saved this innocent alien child of unknown origins, and in a “big reveal” episode Averil announced she would adopt the orphan alien, Clyde. Truth be told, the Dark Star crew had always been a life science expert short of identifying bread mold. The holotube streams went nuts when Avril adopted an orangutan juvenile and her viewership soared but she had become the laughing stock of the Cortex. Only after several weeks of torment did the Dark Star crew realize the kid wasn’t talking because he was mute or traumatized, they saved an ape that would never grow up into a mechanic, award winning scientist, or ace pilot.
Rather than face further humiliation, Avril decided that Clyde would be special. She had knowledge of a secrete program called Darwin at the Ajax Genetics Corporation where they could awaken intelligence in otherwise non-sentient species. Avril and the Dark Star crew paid to have Clyde undergo the gene therapy treatment “endogenous metamorphosis”. When the treatments were completed Clyde was no different from any other teen age boy, or so they thought. Price of accidentally adopting a great ape, 500 credits. Price of endogenous metamorphosis 19,995 credits. Watching the pundits of life science eat their words as your teen age son fights off nano-zombie with hand grenades, priceless.
Clyde is wise beyond his years and a little more than his Intelligence was awakened during the uplift process. Uplift was a religious experience for him and shortly after his ascension to sentience he understood his connection to the rest of the verse. Clyde is wise beyond his years and follows the path of a Mystic (Empath) Priest. However, his wisdom doesn’t always prevail and he is very protective of his “mum”. Like any teenage boy with the ability to influence the minds of others Clyde doesn’t always think before he uses his powers for amusement. Finally, it must be said he is a natural with horseshoes and hand grenades.
